(Washington)—The Republican-controlled House of Representatives today voted to give ICE a staggering $70 billion more in funds, choosing to do Trump’s bidding rather than address the ever-increasing human rights violations happening at ICE detention centers, where people are suffering from lack of medical attention, unsanitary conditions and unsafe food handling.
This additional $70 billion is on top of the $170 billion already earmarked by the Republican-controlled Congress for immigration enforcement agencies so the Trump administration can achieve its heinous mass deportation agenda. This money is going toward state sanctioned racial profiling, warrantless arrests in violation of the 4th Amendment, the detention of children under the age of 18 and their families, and contracts or agreements with public or private for-profit companies owning or operating detention facilities.
The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) continues to demand that our elected leaders vote against giving one more cent to fund ICE and other immigration enforcement agencies. Poll after poll indicates the majority of Americans do not approve of federal enforcement actions targeting immigrants.
We urge Congress to look to your constituents who are out on the streets demanding people be released from ICE warehouses such as Delaney Hall in New Jersey and Adelanto in California.
Our political leaders should instead vote for the following:
Funds for Immigrant Legal Service Funds in cities across the country.
Funds for jurisdictions implementing sanctuary policies.
Redirecting DHS funding from HR 1 to services that benefit communities across the US, such as housing, nutrition assistance, and healthcare.
The ILRC urges political leaders to follow the lead of their constituents who make their voices heard every single day in communities big and small across the nation. Their bravery in standing up to injustice must be your guiding light.
